The Most Expensive Hurricane Damage in the History of Mexico

Mexico's history is littered with examples of the devastation caused by the formation of high-speed winds, which can reach different categories depending on their strength — ranging from 73 miles per hour (category 1) to 155 miles per hour (category 5).

The hurricane season in Mexico officially starts in June and continues through November. However, the peak temperatures of the warm ocean waters that fuel hurricanes occur in September and October. This is when most tropical storms — and certainly the most destructive — make landfall.

But which hurricane in Mexico's recorded history was responsible for the most damage?

*The answer is Hurricane Wilma.

Hurricane Wilma was among the most destructive hurricanes that ever made landfall along the coasts of Mexico. In October 2005, Wilma — with wind speeds of up to 175 miles per hour — pounded the coasts of the Yucatán peninsula in several places, causing unquantifiable losses to regional tourism, agriculture, and economy.

Known as the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, Wilma passed through the island of Cozumel, made landfall in the famed resort city of Cancún, and then passed through Ciudad del Carmen.

The slow-moving storm wreaked maximum damage because it parked itself over some of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations. There was widespread looting, thousands of people had to be evacuated, the airport was shut down, and the power was out for weeks. In the end, 19 people were killed, and the damages caused reached a total of 10 billion USD, making it the most expensive hurricane in the history of Mexico as well as all of Latin America.
